What is your medicine? You know, the thing that makes you happy? Makes you feel better? The thing that makes life a little easier for you when times are tough? What works for you? What is your best medicine?
I can tell you what its not. The best medicine is not anything that causes you pain, or causes another pain. It is not meth, heroin, cocaine, pain pills, or alcohol, gambling, or an abusive relationship. It is not anything that covers up pain with a bandaid, or anything that contributes to pain, even if it temporarily relieves the troubles it causes.
The best medicine is long term. The best medicine is healing. The best medicine improves the quality of your life, and the quality of life for those around you. It is soothing, it is joyful, and it contributes to your personal well-being, safety, and emotional and mental health.
They say laughter is the best medicine, and I tend to agree. The problem is, you have to find something that brings you genuine laughter. No faking it, only the real deal will suffice.
So what is it? What is the best medicine?
You tell me.
Seriously. Tell me what makes you truly happy. Have you found it yet? If not, I will be happy to help you to get started. God helps me to feel joy when I help others. It is part of my best medicine.
Step one. Read the following verse.
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.
Job 8:21
Yes, He will. You only have to look, listen and ask. God will put you on the road to laughter, and will put you on the path to joy.
Why? Because He is the best medicine. He knows what hurts, and He knows exactly how you work, because He created you exactly the way you are. He and only He, can fix the broken pieces, mend the sore spots, and heal what ails you. That’s a promise from somebody who knows firsthand. Me.
You see, I was empty inside for a long time. I hurt and chased false laughter and fake happiness by self medicating. I tried to fill my loneliness, anxiety, and depression with alcohol, gambling and other self-destructive behaviors. These things brought me a certain amount of pleasure, but it never lasted, and contributed to more of the same pain that made me use them in the first place. These things were not my best medicine. These things were false medicine.
I love Jesus. One day I decided to fully turn to Him to find healing. And boy, did He heal, and He continues to heal me through all my trials and problems, because let’s face it. Life is extremely hard. Real life worries and anxieties and problems can be overwhelming, and sometimes impossible to figure out. The good news is, we don’t have to figure them out. We have a God that loves us enough to do the impossible, and help us figure our way out of every dark place. So:
Step two. Read the following verse, and believe it.
Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
Luke 18:27
Have faith. That is the only requirement for this plan. Even if you are struggling with faith, and believing in what seems as if it may be to good to be true, pray. Ask for help. God will strengthen you, your faith, and your trust. Pour your heart out to Him to receive the best medicine.
Step three. Last but not least:
Open your eyes and your heart. What seems impossible to you may be right in front of you. It may be so obvious that it is hiding in plain sight! God is right there!
It may be the prescribed medication that your doctor suggests for the depression. It may be the friend that keeps reaching out to you, that you haven’t had time for. It may even be the puppy you want to adopt (try a rescue organization because honestly those rescues end up rescuing you). It may even be something you have quit doing because it seems frivolous, inconvenient, or expensive. If it helped you, didn’t harm you or others, and soothes your soul, don’t wait for the smoke to clear! God may have very well put the solution right in front of you and you just didn’t see it, or recognize it for the help that it was. The good Lord works in very mysterious ways, and it pleases Him to help us. Let Him help you. He will always provide a way.
So what makes you happy? What makes you laugh? What calms you and soothes you and what interests you? God gives His children many gifts, many talents, and opportunities. He also never gives up on us. Our only job is to open our eyes, believe, and accept the help that He gives.
Are you ready for the best medicine? He’s ready for you. He’s been there all along, waiting for you to finally see through the haze, and recognize what He’s giving you. The best medicine:
Joy. Laughter. Peace. Hope. Love. Healing. Contentment. Trust. Confidence. Ambition. Wisdom. Solutions.
Do you see? Do you understand what is being offered? A way out of the emptiness. And the most amazing part? It has been there all along. You just didn’t realize it. Open your heart, and feel Him. Let God open your eyes, so that you can truly see.
God bless,
Ray
